A Journey of life from within
Corio, Victoria
The architectural concept of reconditioning the mind and discovering inner stillness is embodied in a sensory journey through space. Visitors traverse through archways and along expansive corridors that gradually lead them towards openness and tranquillity.
The design intent is realized through deliberate placements of light pockets, guiding the journey towards an expansive, open space.
Careful consideration and experimentation were employed in designing the openings and orientations to optimise the site’s natural advantages. Unobstructed natural light floods the interiors, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting.
The interconnected spaces are strategically positioned to harness the powerful summer breezes from the South, facilitating natural ventilation and minimising heat gain. In contrast, the design ensures that the cool winds from the North-west are excluded during winter, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment year-round.
The concept of reconditioning the mind and find- ing a sense of stillness is rep- resented through the idea of sight, sound and the traveling through the archways into long corridors that leads to the outside. The intent of the journey accompanied through a series of pockets of lights to an open space.
Through experimentation and sketches openings and orientation were considered to take advan- tage of the site’s open space where light is unob- structed allowing natural light to enter the spaces minimizing the use of artificial lighting. The open connection spaces takes advantage of the strong summer winds coming from the South through the large opening to reduce heat in the building while keeping the cool
winds out from North-west in winter.
